PETAUKE TOWN COUNCIL CONFISCATES OVER 287 BOTTLES OF ILLEGAL LIQUOR

Petauke Town Council, through its Public Health Section, has conducted a successful operation resulting in the seizure of over 287 bottles of assorted liquor from two unlicensed traders. The confiscated items included 15 bottles of the locally brewed illicit beer commonly known as kachasu, alongside popular brands such as Black Label, Eagle Lager, whiskeys, and gins, including First Choice, Bols, and Opaque Beer. The total estimated value of the seized liquor is K4,756.

The seizure was conducted during a routine inspection carried out by our Inspectors at Riverside  (residential) area, violating the provisions of the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011, the Public Health Act, and the Local Government (Street Vending and Nuisance) Amendment Act No. 12 of 2018. The two traders were found operating without valid liquor licenses while one also engaged in the illegal sale of kachasu, a prohibited brew.

Under Section 27 (1) (a) of the Liquor Licensing Act, it is an offense to sell or offer for sale any intoxicating liquor without a license. Offenders are liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding one hundred thousand penalty units, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.

The Council has since issued closure notices to the traders and imposed penalties for non-compliance. Additionally, the traders have been warned against further violations, including noise pollution and the sale of illicit beverages.

Petauke Town Council remains committed to enforcing the law and protecting the welfare of residents. We urge the public to report any illegal activities or noise pollution to our offices for prompt action.
