Inspectors from the Department of Health under Petauke Town Council have seized over 195 assorted alcoholic beverages from five (05) traders who were operating illegally in a residential area, in violation of public health and safety regulations.
The confiscated items included Eagle Lager (375ml), Brutal Fruit (500ml), whiskeys and gins such as Dream Vodka, as well as opaque beer. The estimated value of the seized items stands at K3,761.
The operation was conducted yesterday under the provisions of the Public Health Act Cap 295, the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011, and the Local Government (Street Vending and Nuisance) Amendment Act No. 12 of 2018, which prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages in unauthorized areas particularly residential or zones in order to safeguard community welfare and public order.
Petauke Town Council expresses strong displeasure with the traders involved, who have repeatedly flouted the law despite prior warnings and sensitization efforts. Such practices not only contravene legal statutes but also pose significant risks to public health and safety.
The Local Authority reiterates its commitment to rigorous monitoring and enforcement to ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations. Traders found in violation will face stiffer penalties, as most of them operate without the appropriate licenses.
Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and report any illegal sale of alcoholic beverages in residential areas to the authorities. The items were seized from Tasala, Hillside, and Showgrounds areas of Petauke District.
Petauke Town Council through its Department of Health will continue the routine inspections with expectation that traders will adhere to legal and safety standards.
