Government has handed over solar mini-grid kits worth US$80,000 to schools and health facilities in Kaumbwe Constituency of Petauke District, in a significant step towards improving access to quality education and healthcare services in rural communities.
The solar equipment, donated by Jiangsu Simba New Material Technology Company Limited of China, has been distributed to ten (10) schools and five health facilities to provide a reliable source of electricity and enhance service delivery.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Mr. Paul Thole described the donation as a demonstration of the importance of strategic partnerships in supporting Government’s development agenda.
“Government is greatly appreciative of the support rendered by Simba New Material Technology Company Limited of Jiangsu Province, China through the donation of solar mini-grid kits. This contribution demonstrates the vital importance of partnerships in accelerating Zambia’s energy access agenda and promoting sustainable development, especially for disadvantaged rural communities,” said Mr. Thole.
Mr. Thole noted that the intervention will contribute significantly towards improving access to quality education and healthcare services while supporting Government’s efforts to expand energy access to underserved areas.
Meanwhile, leader of the delegation to China that facilitated the donation, Dr. Aaron Mwanza, said the equipment represents the first phase of support to the constituency.
Dr. Mwanza, who is also the former Member of Parliament for Kaumbwe Constituency and the current United Party for National Development (UPND) parliamentary candidate, disclosed that additional support is expected before the end of July.
“What we have received today is the first phase comprising 76 solar panels of 610 watts each. These will benefit ten schools and five rural health facilities. More equipment is expected to arrive before the end of July,” he said.
The solar-powered facilities are expected to enhance learning outcomes and improve the delivery of critical healthcare services in remote communities.
District Health Office Acting Head of Clinical Care Ms. Beatrice Phiri said the availability of electricity will greatly improve vaccine storage and healthcare provision, particularly during night-time operations.
“Having power in our facilities is a game changer. We will be able to store vaccines properly and provide quality healthcare services both during the day and at night,” she said.
Speaking on behalf of learners, Ms. Twalumba Chilyo expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the solar mini-grid kits will facilitate the effective implementation of the new education curriculum.
“Because of this support, we will have access to the electricity required by the new curriculum. This will help us learn better, understand our lessons more effectively, and prepare for our future,” she said.
The donation is expected to strengthen education and healthcare delivery in Kaumbwe Constituency by providing reliable and sustainable energy to key public institutions, thereby contributing to improved service delivery and community development.
